What are the best nut milks to blend with Purition?

A row of nut milk cartons; Oatly, Plenish & Rude Health

For a smooth and creamy shake, Purition is best blended with milk or a non-dairy alternative. But which non-dairy alternative should I choose? This is one of the most frequent questions we get asked by customers.

Long gone are the days when the only non-dairy option was soya. Today there's almond, coconut, cashew, oat, rice, pea, hemp, even potato – and this is a list that continues to grow!

What are the healthiest plant milks?

Some vegan milks are much healthier choices than others.

Sweetened plant milks, for example, are often high in sugar. We recommend opting for an ‘unsweetened’ plant milk, especially if you’re going to be using it daily. Oat milk is naturally high in sugar, so isn't the best option for low-carb diets.

It’s not uncommon for brands to include gums (thickeners) in their recipes, particularly if they’re opting for a long shelf life. Make sure to check the label and, wherever possible, aim for milks that keep their ingredients list clean and short.

Many plant-based milks also contained refined oils – most often sunflower. Sunflower oil is relatively high in pro-inflammatory omega 6 fats. Most of us already consume too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3, so it's best to avoid this added ingredient if you can.

Our go-to plant milks

Ultimately, we'd recommend choosing brands that only use ‘real food’ ingredients – just like us! Check out our recommendations below:

Almond milk

Almond milk complements our Wholefood Nutrition, Lattes and Frappes really well. It's also naturally low in sugar and a great source of vitamin E.

We like and highly recommend Plenish! We're big fans of all their nut milks, as they contain only 2 or 3 ingredients. Give their cashew & hazelnut milks a try, too!

Make sure to double check the label on some of the bigger brands of almond milk, which often contain a very low percentage of almonds, but a lot of unnecessary additives.

Oat milk

Purition blended with oat milk gives a sweeter, creamier taste. Our milk of choice is Oatly Organic, as it has a short and clean ingredients list. Plenish Oat or Jord Oat & Hemp are also great options.

Combining Oatly with Strawberry Purition tastes amazing and you get a good dose of fibre too, which helps slow digestion, keeping hunger pangs at bay for longer!

Coconut milk

When it comes to coconut milk, Rude Health is our brand of choice due to its short, simple ingredients list. We also recommend Innocent Coconut and Cocos Organic Coconut Kefir.

Unsweetened coconut milk is naturally low in sugar and makes a good choice for low-carb and keto diets.

Despite being low in sugar, coconut milk has a wonderfully sweet and creamy flavour! Our favourite combo is coconut milk with any of the chocolatey Purition flavours. It's like a Bounty bar, yet healthier!

Matching Purition with nut milks by flavour combos

It’s worth knowing that different milks (especially plant-based milks) bring their own flavours, which can either mask or enhance the natural and authentic flavour of Purition.

So if you’re new to Purition and not getting as much flavour as expected, it’s worth experimenting with different nut milk combinations to find what works best for you.

Using coconut milk in Coconut, Strawberry or Chocolate Orange Purition works much better than using other nut milks, which can often overpower the delicate flavour of the freeze-dried fruits.

Oat milk stands up to the Beetroot flavours and is really delicious when blended with the Coffee & Walnut and Strawberry flavours too!

Almond milk is good with most Purition flavours, especially Almond, Coffee and Walnut, Pistachio. It can be a little overpowering in any of the fruity flavours.
